Share It!

If you’ve just set up a Berkey Water Filter System, one of the first things you may want to do is the Berkey red dye test.

This simple test helps you confirm that your Black Berkey Filters are actually working correctly.

The red dye test is widely used because it gives a quick, clear visual result – if the water comes out clear, the system is filtering correctly. If it doesn’t, something in the setup needs attention.

In this guide, you’ll learn exactly:

  • How to do the Berkey red dye test (step-by-step)
  • What clear water actually means
  • Why pink water appears (and how to fix it)
  • What the test does not tell you about water safety

If you haven’t set up your Berkey system yet, start with the guide below first.

Quick Answer (What This Test Shows)

The Berkey red dye test checks whether your Berkey Water Filter System is properly filtering water.

  • Add red food colouring to the top chamber
  • Let it filter through normally
  • Clear water = filters are working correctly
  • Pink water = something is wrong with setup or sealing

This test is a quick visual check only – not a full water quality test.

What Is the Berkey Red Dye Test?

The Berkey red dye test is a simple visual method used to check whether your filtration system is functioning correctly.

You add red food colouring (mixed with water) to the upper chamber and allow the system to filter the water naturally.

If everything is working properly, the dye should be completely removed by the time the water reaches the lower chamber.

How to Do the Berkey Red Dye Test (Step-by-Step)

1. Ensure Black Filters Are Properly Primed

Berkey First Setup - Prime the Black Filters
Priming the Berkey black elements

Before performing the red dye test, it’s imperative to prime the black Berkey elements first. Poor priming is the #1 reason for failed tests.

⚠️ NOTE: If you’re using fluoride filters in your Berkey – DO NOT have them installed during the red dye test. This is to check the black filters only.

2. Set the Upper Chamber on Jars

Sit the upper chamber on jars

Set your upper chamber on top of some glass jars with each filter thread positioned inside each of the jars.

This is the best way to visually see what’s dripping through or around the filters while it’s in progress.

3. Add Red Food Dye Water

Pouring in the red water

Add a few drops of red food colouring to about a litre or so of water and stir gently until the water is clearly red.

Pour this red water into the upper chamber of your Berkey.

4. Let the System Filter Naturally

Allow time for water to pass from the upper chamber, through the filters and into the lower chamber.

5. Check the Result

Clear water coming through

Have a look at the water collecting in each jar. You should be able to see it dripping through the centre of the thread from each filter and into the jar.

Here’s what you’re looking for:

  • If filters are working correctly → you’ll see completely clear water with no pink or red tint.
  • If there’s an issue → the water will have a red or pink tint.

What the Red Dye Test Does NOT Prove

It’s important not to over-interpret the results of the Berkey red dye test.

The test does NOT confirm removal of:

  • Bacteria or viruses
  • Heavy metals
  • Dissolved solids (TDS)
  • All chemical contaminants

It is basically a function test, not a water safety certification.

Why Is My Berkey Water Pink?

If any colour appears in the filtered water, something is not set up correctly.

Common causes include:

  • Filters not fully primed → reprime
  • Filters not tightened properly → tighten a little more
  • Missing or misaligned washers → check washers & retighten
  • Gaps allowing unfiltered water through → tighten seal a little more

Before assuming that there’s something wrong with the filter, always re-check all of your installation steps.
