Quick Answer

If your Berkey tap is leaking, tighten the inner nut firmly (use a rubber glove for better grip).
If it still leaks, remove the tap, dry all parts thoroughly, and apply thread tape before reinstalling.

Why Your Berkey Tap Is Leaking

A leaking Berkey tap is usually caused by one of the following:

  • The inner nut isn’t tightened enough
  • The washer isn’t sitting flat or properly aligned
  • The tap thread isn’t sealed properly

In my case, it turned out to be a mix of not being tight enough at first and then needing a better seal to fully stop the leak.

Step-by-Step: How to Fix a Leaking Berkey Tap

1. Tighten the Inner Nut Properly

Berkey Leaking Tap - tighten the nut
Tighten the nut a bit more

Start by tightening the plastic nut on the inside of the Berkey tank.

This can be surprisingly difficult to grip, and finger strength alone often isn’t enough. The plastic nut that came with my Berkey also wouldn’t suit any of the spanners or tools I had, either.

💡 TIP!
Put on a rubber glove to get a better grip.
This made a big difference for me and allowed me to properly tighten the nut.

Once tightened, refill your Berkey and let the water sit in the tank for a while to check for leaks. It’s handy to keep the Berkey at the sink just in case.

2. If It’s Still Leaking, Don’t Ignore It

In my case, the leaking Berkey tap seemed fixed at first – but a few hours later, I noticed it was leaking again.

If that happens, don’t just keep tightening. It’s time to move to the next step.

3. Disassemble and Dry Everything

Empty the Berkey water tank completely, then:

  • Remove the tap
  • Dry all parts thoroughly
  • Check that the washer is flat and correctly positioned

This step is important – any moisture or misalignment can prevent a proper seal.

4. Apply Thread Tape (The Fix That Worked)

Thread Tape
Example of applying plumbing tape to tap thread

This is what finally solved the leaking Berkey tap issue for me.

Wrap a small amount of plumbing thread tape (in the same direction you’ll screw the tap in) around the tap thread, then reinstall and tighten everything firmly.

After doing this, my leak stopped completely and hasn’t come back since.

Common Mistakes That Cause Berkey Tap Leaks

Berkey Water Filter, Leaking Tap

If your Berkey tap keeps leaking, one of these is usually the reason:

  • Not tightening the nut enough (very common)
  • Not having enough grip to fully tighten it
  • Cross-threading the tap during installation
  • Washer not sitting flat
  • Skipping thread tape when a tighter seal is needed

Final Thoughts

A leaking Berkey tap can be frustrating, especially during setup, but it’s almost always an easy fix once you know what to look for.

For most people, the solution comes down to:

  • Proper tightening (with enough grip)
  • Or using thread tape for a better seal

If you’re still setting up your system, I highly recommend following a complete step-by-step guide to avoid these common issues in the first place.

FAQs

Why is my Berkey tap still leaking after tightening?

If tightening doesn’t fix the issue, the seal likely isn’t tight enough. Disassembling, drying everything, and adding thread tape usually solves persistent leaks.

Do you need thread tape on a Berkey tap?

Not always – but if tightening alone doesn’t stop the leak, thread tape can help create a proper seal.

Is a leaking Berkey tap normal during setup?

Yes, this is a common issue during the first setup and is usually quick to fix.
