If you enjoy cappuccinos or mochas but don’t want to keep buying supermarket sachets, this easy homemade coffee powder mix is a simple alternative.
This is the cappuccino mix I make at home for myself — it’s not meant to be “perfect” or overly technical. The best part is that you can adjust it to suit your own taste and use whatever ingredients you prefer. It’s cheaper than store-bought sachets, avoids unnecessary additives, and only takes a couple of minutes to make.
Once mixed, it stores well in the pantry and works just like the sachets: just add hot water (and milk if you like) and stir.

Follow along below as I show you how I make my own Cappuccino/Mocha powder instead of buying the sachets. 👇
Why Make Your Own Cappuccino or Mocha Mix?
- Cheaper than buying single-serve sachets
- No additives or unnecessary ingredients
- Customisable to your taste
- Pantry-stable and quick to prepare
- Less packaging and waste

Homemade Cappuccino / Mocha Coffee Powder Mix

Ingredients
- 1 cup instant coffee
- 1¼ cups milk powder
- (You can use coconut milk powder for a vegan option)
- 1 cup sugar
- ½ cup drinking chocolate
- ½ teaspoon nutmeg
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon

How to Make the Coffee Powder Mix
- Add all ingredients to a large bowl.
- Mix thoroughly until everything is evenly combined.
- Using a funnel, transfer the mixture into clean, airtight jars.
- Seal and store in the pantry.
This recipe makes approximately two jars of coffee mix.
| 💡 HOT TIP: Make your own DIY funnel by cutting the top off a plastic soft drink bottle! |

How to Use the Cappuccino Mix
How to Use the Cappuccino/Mocha Mix:
- Add about 1 tablespoon of the mix to a mug
- For smaller mugs, 2 teaspoons works well
- Add hot water and stir until dissolved
- Add a sprinkle of cocoa powder or choc powder to the top if you wish
The mix already contains milk powder, so you don’t need to add milk.
However, you can add a splash of milk if you want to cool it down faster or prefer a creamier drink.

Cappuccino vs Mocha

This mix sits somewhere between a cappuccino and a mocha because of the drinking chocolate.
- For a more cappuccino-style mix, reduce the drinking chocolate
- For a stronger mocha flavour, add a little more drinking chocolate
You can also adjust the sugar, spices, or coffee strength to suit your taste.

Storage & Shelf Life
- Store in airtight jars or containers
- Keep in a cool, dry place
- Best used within 2–3 months – but will last much longer as long as the powder’s kept dry

Final Thoughts
I use this homemade cappuccino mix as an occasional treat instead of buying café coffees or sachets from the supermarket. It’s quick to make, costs less, and avoids the additives often found in pre-made mixes.
If you enjoy small, practical swaps that save money without giving up comfort, this is an easy one to add to your routine.
